Breast Augmentation Recovery Tips from a cosmetic Surgeon

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery can be made more comfortable with the right preparation. While most women start to feel more like themselves after the first-week post-surgery, the official recovery timeline is six weeks. Following the advice of your cosmetic surgeon can help to speed up your healing. Try these breast augmentation recovery tips to make your post-operative period more comfortable.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Tips For A Speedier Recovery

Get Some Help Around The House

The key to a successful recovery is getting enough rest and getting enough rest after your breast augmentation surgery is essential. Make sure you have done your grocery shopping before your surgery and your house is stocked up with nutritious food and ideally, ready-made meals. While you do need to eat nutritious meals and drink plenty of water, you also need to rest and sleep so if you can package any of your meals ahead of time, it’s a good idea to do it.

You will be told to avoid driving and heavy lifting for at least six weeks, so you may need to range for someone to help you around the house for the initial recovery period.

Get Lots Of Sleep

Sleep is the best medicine so get as much of it as you can in the days following your surgery. You will have to sleep on your back or your side while you recover. It’s also a good idea to keep your body as elevated as possible so stack a few pillows up to lean on while you heal.

Take Your Medication As Directed

The first three days after breast augmentation surgery are usually the most uncomfortable and any pain or discomfort you feel should start to improve after this.

Many women find they can switch to over-the-counter pain medication after the first few days but taking the prescribed medication on schedule can make the first few days much more tolerable.

Be Patient

While the worst of the swelling should improve in the first week, you may have some swelling present for months after your breast augmentation surgery. It could take a couple of months before your breasts’ final size, shape and position are evident. One of our biggest tips is to be patient and have faith in your body and the work of your surgeon.

Take A Break From Exercise

Most women can resume light physical exercise two to three weeks after breast augmentation surgery, but make sure you get the go-ahead from your cosmetic surgeon first. Initially, you won’t be able to do heavy lifting or vigorous cardio but you will be able to increase your exertion level as the weeks’ progress. One of our biggest tips is to relax and take the time to recover. Soon you will be able to get back to exercise and fitness.

Practice Wound Care

After your breast augmentation surgery, you will have surgical wounds to care for. Make sure you follow the advice of your cosmetic surgeon to avoid infection and encourage good healing. Wound dressings are usually kept on for the first week, whereafter you will visit your cosmetic surgeon to have them removed. At this appointment, you will be given instructions on how to care for your wounds.

Make Sure You Have The Right Support

Recovery bras offer you the best level of support when recovering from breast augmentation surgery so wear them all the time. Do not wear underwire bras for at least 12 weeks after your surgery. Wearing a recovery bra helps to reduce swelling and boost recovery. They improve circulation, make breast implants more stable, and provide mild compression to facilitate better lymph drainage

One of our best breast augmentation recovery tips is to consider investing in button-down shirts, which are more comfortable as you don’t have to pull them over your head to wear them.

Contact Your cosmetic Surgeon Immediately If You Have Concerns

Being informed is an important part of your recovery. You need to understand which warning signs to watch out for so you know when to contact your surgeon. Any sign of infection or bleeding under the skin should be reported to your surgeon immediately. If you develop a fever or nausea, you should also notify your surgeon as soon as possible.

Eat Nutritious Food And Stay Hydrated

While you probably won’t have much of an appetite on the day of your surgery, it’s important to eat nutritious food to fuel your recovery. Make sure you eat small, frequent meals that are nutrient-dense to support your recovery. This is important when you are taking pain medication, as it shouldn’t be taken on an empty stomach.

Include fibre-rich foods in your diet, as constipation often follows surgical procedures. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these can contribute to swelling, but make sure you drink plenty of water.

Breast augmentation is a major surgical procedure but working with an experienced and well-qualified surgeon and doing the relevant preparation is key to a successful outcome. For more breast augmentation recovery tips please call us: (02) 8599 7161.

Breast Augmentation Recovery: Heal Faster with These Tips

Having breast augmentation surgery requires a great deal of pre-and post-operative planning in order to recover properly. By keeping yourself as healthy as possible before the procedure and following your surgeon’s breast augmentation recovery tips you can heal up your recovery time. Let’s take a look at the breast augmentation recovery timeline and what you might expect after getting breast implants.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase or enhance the size of your breasts using breast implants. It is performed under general anaesthetic. On average you can expect a six to eight-week recovery timeline.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline

24-Hours After The Surgery

Once the anaesthetic has worn off you will experience pain in your chest, nausea, tiredness and sensitivity in your breasts. There will also be swelling and bruising that will improve over time. You must arrange for someone else to drive you home afterwards.

The first 24-hours after having your breast implants are the most uncomfortable period, but you will be given pain medication and muscle relaxants to help you through it. Once your muscles have stretched, you should not feel pain anymore. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to care for your incision sites. It’s likely that your breasts will be taped to your chest

Five To Seven Days After The Procedure

During the first week, it is normal to experience discomfort and pain but it should be easy to relieve with medication and should be less intense as time passes.

breast augmentation after care and recovery bondi junctionYou will be advised to avoid heavy lifting or postures that require you to lift your arms above your head.

Shirts that button down the front is much easier to put on and take off, and don’t require you to lift your arms above your head.

By this time, your breast implants will start settling into their new positions. If your surgeon has shown you how to massage them, you should continue to do this throughout the week.

This will improve swelling and help you to relax your chest muscles.

Three To Four Weeks Later

By the third and fourth week following your breast implants, you should feel very little discomfort and pain however it’s possible you may still have some bruising.

At this stage, you may be able to resume light exercise. It’s a good idea to wear a surgical bra, to give you extra support. They have clasps on the front of the bra, which makes them easier to remove.

Four To Six Weeks Later

By this point, most patients have achieved full recovery and can return to their daily activities.  You will probably visit your cosmetic surgeon for a follow-up appointment around this point. Most patients have healed six weeks after surgery.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation: Tips For Faster Healing

By following these breast augmentation tips, you may be able to facilitate a faster recovery

Make sure you wear a recovery bra

Recovery bras are easy to put on and take off and provide additional support that helps with a speedier delivery. Wear one for as long as possible.

Take your pain medication as required

Your medication can make recovery a more bearable process so take it as needed. The pain and discomfort should improve as you get used to your breast implants, but the medication can make the healing process much easier on you.

Take it easy on exercise for a few weeks

It’s advisable to avoid vigorous activities that cause your blood pressure to spike during your recovery. Your cosmetic surgeon will let you know when you can resume exercise.

Take good care of your incision sites

Before you leave the surgery, your cosmetic surgeon will explain how to look after your incision sites. Make sure you follow the advice and apply the ointment or bandage to your breasts as directed.

Make sure your home is ready for your arrival

Get your home ready ahead of time by ensuring you have a comfortable spot to recover in. get some help around the house to keep it clean and have home-cooked meals every day. If possible, make a few home-cooked meals and freeze them. Eating a healthy diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals can make recovery go faster.

Do not smoke

Smoking interferes with your body’s ability to heal and can slow the process down. It can also make you more susceptible to infection. It’s advisable to quit at least a few weeks before your surgery, and you definitely should not smoke during your recovery period.

What To Look Out For After Breast Implants

If your breasts look red, feel warm to the touch and you have a fever you must notify your cosmetic surgeon as this could be a sign of an infection that needs treatment.

Any worsening pain or swelling should also be discussed with your surgeon.

Make sure you keep all your follow up appointments during recovery after breast augmentation so your surgeon can ensure you are reaching your recovery goals.

Breast Augmentation Recovery – Your Timeline After Surgery

If you’re planning a breast augmentation you’ll need to factor in planning for your recovery. A mammoplasty is a major surgery that will take you some time to recover from. Understanding the recovery timeline can help you to prepare physically and mentally for the procedure, and how to spot the early signs of complications. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect during breast augmentation recovery.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation: The Timeline

On average you can expect a six to eight week recovery period after your mammoplasty. Everyone is different and heals at a different pace, so your timeline may look a little different.

What To Expect Post-Surgery?

Your mammoplasty will be performed under anaesthesia so you should not feel any discomfort until after it has worn off. When you wake up you’re likely to feel disoriented and tired, and your chest muscles may feel stretched and tight. Muscle aches in your chest should dissipate as the muscle stretches. You may feel nauseous as a result of the anaesthesia, and some pain as the anaesthetic wears off.

Most patients will be allowed to go home after their surgery, but before that, your chest will be bandaged to give your breasts support. Before you are discharged your cosmetic surgeon will explain how to care for your wounds.

The side effects to expect

You will have bruising and swelling in your chest after your procedure. This should improve in the days after the surgery but you will need to take pain medication as prescribed to keep it manageable. Muscle relaxants may also be prescribed to ease muscle aches.

Five To Seven Days After Your Breast Augmentation

It’s normal to still experience a small amount of bleeding three to fives day post-op. If there is an increase in bleeding or if you have any concerns, you must contact your surgeon straight away.

Once the first week has passed, your pain should have eased and should be mild. By this stage, you probably won’t need pain relief anymore. At the end of the first week, you should be able to resume your day-to-day activities but you won’t be able to exercise yet. Avoid lifting your arms above your head, or doing any activity that puts your incisions under pressure.

Your surgeon will have shown you how to massage your breast tissue to reduce swelling. It’s important that you continue to do this even if the swelling is visibly better.

Three To Four Weeks After Surgery

By this point, pain and swelling should have improved and should be very mild. You may still have visible bruising but it should look better. You should still wear a post-surgical bra for added support during this time.

Your surgeon may also give you the go-ahead at this stage to do some light exercise but you must avoid anything too vigorous.

After about two months you will be on your way to full breast augmentation recovery but you may still have some discomfort, bruising and swelling.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Tips

You can take more control over your recovery after breast augmentation by following your surgeon’s breast augmentation recovery tips closely, and by considering this advice:

Rest is the best medicine

Having the chance to rest and sleep can fast track your recovery. Block at least three weeks out of your schedule so that you can take the time to heal. You will have to avoid exercise for at least two to three weeks and when you resume physical activity, it will need to be gradual and under the supervision of your surgeon.

Take good care of your incisions

Your surgeon will explain how to look after your wounds, which may include applying ointment or wearing a bandage. Make sure you do this. If necessary, ask someone else for help.

Make sure your home is ready for your arrival

timeline healing breast augmentation bondi junctionDo as much as you can to get your home ready before your surgery. Make sure your fridge is stocked up with fresh foods and freeze some home-cooked meals ahead of time so you really can take the opportunity to heal and recover.

If possible get some help at home to lessen your load.

Remember that wholesome real foods (as opposed to convenience foods) can speed up your recovery. Fruit, vegetables and whole grains are full of vitamins and minerals that your body needs for healing.

Wear a recovery bra as directed

Recovery bras have been purpose-built to help you recover after surgery by offering added support.

Make sure you have loose-fitting clothing

Loose clothing that doesn’t restrict your breasts is recommended for recovery after a breast augmentation. Consider button-up tops, which don’t have to be put on over your head, and which you can leave unbuttoned if you need to.

Take your prescribed medication

Medication for pain and swelling makes the recovery much more bearable. You can also use small iced compresses to relieve bruising and swelling, just make sure they aren’t too heavy on your breasts.
