It’s a well-known fact that guys love boobs. But what if they’re attached to their own bodies? Gynaecomastia or pseudogynecomastia (pardon?!) also known as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’ is the development of excess breast tissue and affects up to 30% of the Australian population.
Gynaecomastia is the term used to describe the benign enlargement of male breast tissue (resulting from a decrease in androgen effect or increase in oestrogen effect) whereas pseudogynecomastia is breast enlargement due to adipose tissue.
And with our sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles, it’s not going to go away. McDonalds, KFC and Hungry Jacks are on every corner, and most men enjoy a couple of drinks now and then. No wonder more guys are getting moobs as they get older!
This can be an incredibly embarrassing condition affecting men on personal, social and professional levels. The good news is that acceptance of cosmetic surgery worldwide is dramatically increasing and male breast reduction surgery can permanently resolve the problem. Male breast reduction surgery is growing in popularity and many men are choosing this procedure to improve their looks and self-confidence.
Men feel the need to look good too
And we’re all about you feeling great about your body, as long as you’re doing it for you and not to fulfill somebody else’s ideals. Male breast reduction contours the chest area to provide a much more toned and athletic chest. The results of this procedure can be dramatic and permanent, providing you keep a stable weight.
The procedure
Our male breast surgery procedure, or ‘mammoplasty’ as it’s formally called, removes all excess fatty tissue from the breast area with the use of a cannula. Only a small amount of incisions are made and then combined with liposuction to remove the excess fat and contour the chest wall. Once the area has healed, the scars are barely noticeable.
Recovery time and tips
Recovery time is usually minimal with many of our patients returning to their normal day-to-day life after a few days. Of course, strenuous exercise should be avoided for six weeks. You will experience some mild discomfort for the first week or so however, the medication we prescribe you will ease that.
This procedure is ideal for men who are physically and psychologically healthy and have tried physical exercise and diet first to attain a more defined chest. We would not recommend this procedure to obese or overweight patients.
During our consultation, we will assess whether you are a good surgical candidate and discuss your personal history and future goals. We will talk you through the procedure step by step along with the risks, side affects and recovery time. It’s essential you’re empowered and equipped with all the information you need in order to make an informed decision.
